Random Disappearences

So, sometimes I randomly disappear. These disappearances are never planned by anyone, certainly not by me--They just happen and sometimes they happen for several days at a time. I apologize for the one we just went through and the others that are surely coming.

After every disappearance I make a point to be better. I insist that I'll prioritize more; that I'll simply try harder. I'm being honest when I say these things and I do follow these statements well for a time. Inevitably though...I fail.

Many culprits have aided me in this. Procrastination is a big visitor to my house. I don't like him. I know he's bad for me, but I still always let him in. Then there's Laziness (Procrastination's friend since high school). He calls at least once a day, but doesn't strive as hard for my attention as Procrastination does. He recognizes that Procrastination and I have a long time, on-again-off-again thing going on and doesn't really bother.

Then there's RPG...

He's trouble in blue jeans-- or rather, level 62 Elf Armor. He never sticks around long, as he prefers his visits to be fast and dirty. It starts with a few teasing messages and then the next thing I know, we've been up all night together. I'm dehydrated, exhausted, and hungry. That's never the end of it though. He sticks around for a few days for repeat sessions. Then, like a bad habit, he's out the door and out of my life. At least, until he rolls back into town. And I know he always will.

Though these are my biggest problems, they are only the tip of the iceberg. Family and Work always play a part. Procrastination and Laziness love to come around when they've been in my life for the day.

Some people might say that these aren't culprits; they are excuses. Maybe they are. Maybe they aren't. They are reasons. They are traits. They're parts of me that will never fade away because they make up the whole of who I am. Though I try to improve upon them, I still accept them.

I will not end this...whatever this is...by making false promises. I will try to be better, but at some point, I will fail. The only thing I can say with any amount of certainty is that Perfection will never be a visitor to my house-- not even as a weekend fling.

On Making Goal

This was my second attempt at crowdfunding a book. My first attempt had been for a fantasy novel, EXAULTA, and the goal had been set way too high. On that campaign, I'd managed to raise a healthy $500, but it was still only a drop in what I'd asked for. Being that it was on Kickstarter, I didn't get any of it.

So when it came time to fund THE BEAST, I dropped my goal. I asked for the bare minimum and added an unofficial "stretch goal". I also didn't put all of my hopes on it. I didn't want to be let down like before.

As you can see, by the photo in this post, I was not let down. Not even by a little. But let me not get too far ahead of myself.

THE BEAST's campaign started off with a soft bang. Right up front I received 6 contributions totalling $180.  At least 3 of these funders had contributed to my Exaulta campaign.

Then there was a whole lot of nothing for awhile. Entire weeks went by where the campaign went unnoticed. From what I've read, that's normal. Then about 2 weeks before the end of the campaign, a trickle started. A donation here. A donation there. Just enough to give me hope.

I'd imagined what it would be like hitting goal. I saw myself smiling, jumping up and down, showing my excitement in a vlog, and blasting it all over the internet. That's not what happened though.

In the last few days of my campaign, I got sick. I had planned on sending out loads of emails, reminding people to contribute. Instead I was bedridden. Worst cold I'd had in years.

While I was in bed with a cold pack on my head, surrounded by a field of tissues, a flood had started-- and I'm not referring to the flood coming from my nose. Contributions were hitting my campaign left and right. I'd made goal and didn't even know it.

When I finally did realize that I'd made goal, I was too sick to even react. But the contributions kept coming and soon I'd made my stretch goal. Which I am super thrilled about because I'd basically given up hope on getting the funding for the book trailer.

Thanks to all of my supporters (friends, family, and subscribers) for making this happen. Even when I couldn't pull out all of the stops to motivate people, you all still came through for me.

To show my thanks, every contributor will get their name in the acknowledgements and I'll send them one of my custom postcards when the book releases. If you want to get in on this awesomeness, there's still time. About 8 hours left to get those last minute contributions in!

THE BEAST NEARLY FUNDED - CAMPAIGN ENDING SOON!

Best Cover Reaction Ever!

Every now and again I swing over to goodreads and check on my book. After that major glitch where the star rating only reflected one bad review, I feel the need to keep a bit of an eye on it.

I checked last night and found a wonderful cover reaction (shown below) that had me rolling. The first sentence made me feel a bit like a celebrity. She knows who I am, probably watches my videos, and is excited about something I'm doing! Woohoo! The middle section made me smile. She loves my cover!!! Woohoo again!

Then I read the final sentence and nearly died. I felt like it was a threat lol. Like she was standing before me, bubbly and gushing over my cover, then suddenly she whips out a knife and issues that simple warning.

Do not worry, Geisha Cielos (loquaciousreaders), I have zero intention of ever changing that cover. I love it too :)

If you guys are as excited as Geisha and I are about this book, you should consider checking out the book's publication campaign-- Only 17 days left! Read the first two chapters OR pre-order yourself a copy!

Now's Your Chance

I have been talking about THE BEAST for a very long time. It's almost ready! It kills me that I won't be able to pay for the publishing costs. It's so stupid that, of all things, it's money that's standing in my way.
However, now is your chance to read at least the first TWO chapters for FREE! I'm trying to raise money and to show people that this book is worth funding, I've made the chapters available. All I ask for in return is for you to share my crowdfunding campaign on Twitter or Facebook.
If you like what you read, please consider making a contribution. Without help, it's going to take a long time to pay for publication. This book is counting on you guys.

My 2014 Book Releases

To keep myself on track with my goals this year, I thought it would be wise to share my planned releases. It's out there and I can't take it back, which is that much of a reason to keep working hard.

By the by, I recently bought a FlipHD off ebay. It's used and won't be here for another week or so, BUT I plan to use it for daily vlogs on my personal youtube channel. I've never done daily vlogs, so I have no idea how I will take to it. I can assure you that the videos will be completely different from what ends up on my main channel and won't be book related. I mean, I'll talk about books some but mostly it will be about what's going on in my life, including writing.

The Woes Of Editing And Today's Video: Behind The Scenes

Today's video is the Behind The Scenes for my cover reveal. The whole process was just insane. But I think it was worth it. Everyone seemed to enjoy it and I've heard only great things about the cover. So, thanks everyone! The video is below.

The book itself is moving at a steady pace. Editing is always hard. Writing is by far the fun part, but it's also the easiest. The problem I'm finding right now is that I'm no longer a reader. I'm an editor looking for mistakes and ways to make it better. My eyes have turned into unfeeling cameras, always looking for the problem. When I have to put myself in the moment to rewrite something, I can get right into the character's skin without a hitch. I just can't go back and read it all, and see it, as a true reader would.

This leaves me with a lot of doubt. Excuse my language, but insecurity is a bitch. It curls up in your stomach like an achy mass and spreads its tentacles through your body. Ugh.

How do I know if it's good? What if I bust my butt to get it ready for publication and all of my beta readers come back with horrible reviews? I simply have no way of knowing. All it takes is one person to say they don't like it and the doubt monster starts squirming.

So, yeah, there's really nowhere to go from there. I don't have some happy solution to make it all better. At this moment, I'm standing on a shaky bridge and hoping that I can make it across.

Alright, that's enough metaphors for one blog post. I hope you guys watch and enjoy today's video. It's much lighter than this post was lol. Links for THE BEAST are below. Talk soon!!!

So there it is! The much anticipated cover. Gah, I've been dying to share it with you all for so long and now it's finally here. I really hope you all like it. Really. Really. REALLY, hope you all like it. Personally, I'm just in love with the cover. The title font couldn't be more perfect. Mooney Designs did a wonderful job with it.

I hope you guys liked the reveal video as well. It was so much work lol! So many takes. Honestly. I'm even working on a Behind The Scenes to post on Monday. There were just so many unexpected factors while filming this video. However, I think it turned out pretty good and, at the very least, it was a unique way to reveal a book cover.

Thank you guys so much for clicking the video or clicking on this post just to see my cover. Thank you to everyone who lent their help in sharing this reveal as well as beta reading. This cover is going to end up on a lot of awesome blogs. To check some of those out, just look in the description of the video.

Odd Genre Reading Challenge

The Odd Genre Reading Challenge is about forcing you out of your comfort zone, getting you to read new things, and hopefully expanding your mind. At least that's why I'm doing it.

This challenge is not meant to change the way I read completely. I will never be an avid Mystery or Contemporary Fiction reader. I know what I like and it just won't happen. I generally don't like Mystery because it's predictable. It's not very often I can't figure out the bad guy early on. Contemporary Fiction just can't hold my interest. I get bored. If I thought the everyday stuff was interesting, I wouldn't need to read. That's why I like fantasy adventure. It can take you anywhere.

But, that being said, it's important to try new things. I can't guarantee I'll read any of the books mentioned in today's video-- except Michio Kaku's The Future Of The Mind. The other books might be fun and entertaining, but Michio's book will broaden my horizons and help me to see things in a different light. If I really like the book, then I might end up reading more sciency books instead.

If you're interested in doing this challenge too, just comment on the video or below to let me know. Good Luck!

Currently Reading & Just Finished: Taking On The Dead & Breathless

I've been in a bit of a slump. Slump isn't the right word for it either. A reading slump is when you can't find anything that you can get into. That's not my problem. My problem is that I simply don't want to read. The desire is gone.

I've theorized on twitter that this might be because I'm working so hard on my books. I'm writing and editing all of the time-- that's a lot of words coming at me everyday. So maybe, that's why my reading drive has been out of gas. My brain is feeding on my books.

Good news is that I think I might be getting the desire again. I'm still writing and editing a lot, so maybe this is a temporary feeling. Still I just finished BREATHLESS by Sophie Jordan. Breathless is a spin-off novella about the FIRELIGHT character, Az.

If you followed my YouTube channel this week, then you know that I recently read
the entire Firelight Series from beginning to end this year. I did a quickie video review here. While I did enjoy those books, I can't really say the same about this novella.

Breathless by Sophie Jordan
My rating: 3.5 of 5 stars

I should probably stop reading Novellas. I don't think they ever leave a lasting impression. This one was no different. It was well written. The romance was nice. The story was ok. Nothing exceptional.

There's no action or excitement in this story to really give us an idea of how useful Az would be in a fight. However, she played the part of the damsel in the actual series, so I imagine it would be the same any other time.

It took me longer to finish Breathless than it should have, because I didn't have the
drive to read and the story itself wasn't exactly a big draw either. But a few days ago I came across TAKING ON THE DEAD by Annie Walls. Its been on my mind ever since. A zombie novel. Just what I need. A good-old, gritty survival story.

My pure excitement for the book got me to finish Breathless this morning, which couldn't have take me more than 10 minutes. I finished it, opened up Taking On The Dead, and started reading. I didn't read a lot, just a few pages. Long enough to see the first zombie-- and it was GREAT! I'm already in love with the writing and the setting. I can't wait to keep reading.

Btw, when I went on to Goodreads to add this to my reading shelf, I noticed that a lot of you already had it added as a "To-Read". How dare you know about this awesome zombie novel with loads of potential, and not tell me! For shame. For shame on all of you ;P

Anyway, (Not that anyone ever comments, but just in case) what are you guys reading and what did you just finish. Anything good? Hiding any zombie novels that I should know about? Well, off to do some more editing. Talk soon guys! -Lindsay Mead

Firelight (Firelight, #1)Firelight by Sophie Jordan
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

This is my second time reading this book. I read it once as an ARC and loved it. I loved it just as much the second time through, but this time I'm able to jump right into book 2,Vanish. Sophie Jordan has gorgeous writing. Every sentence flows right into the next and I think that's what really keeps me turning the page. Firelight starts off with a lot of action and turns into an emotional roller coaster. I warn you though, the ending will have you screaming. I talk about this book and others on my YouTube channel, here: http://bit.ly/RN2j5n
My Spoilery Thoughts:
I would say that my biggest complaint about this story is Jacinda's mother and sister, combined with Jacinda's lack of self confidence. Jacinda's mom rips her away from the pride all because they might clip her wings. That is horrifying, but isn't Jacinda's mom doing the same thing to her daughter by taking her to a desert? In fact, isn't her mother worse because she wishes to kill Jacinda's Draki completely. Jacinda is constantly being told that she's selfish and she even berates herself with this. However, I believe that it is in fact her mother and sister who are selfish. They didn't leave for Jacinda, they left because they were unhappy with the pride. They just leaped at the first excuse that came along. All I wanted during this book was for Jacinda to finally take care of herself. Stand up for yourself! Stand up to your family! Don't let them destroy you! I kept hoping that at some point she would do this and then leave them-- go find people who will love and respect her or at least someplace where she can be free.

I hope Jacinda will at some point actually breathe fire. Steams cool and all, but I wanna see her charbroil someone. Just sayin.

On a different note, I pictured Zach Efron as Will. Don't know why, but it was awesome. Especially the beginning scene with him in the water and entering the cave. Yum.

We Have A Description: THE BEAST!!!

Ladies and gentlemen, we have a description! Finally, I'm giving you more about THE BEAST than just a nice tagline. You have a full book blurb to enjoy. I'm eager to hear thoughts, so without further ado, here it is:

Demon possession has swept through Glace's neighboring kingdom, turning humans into Hellhounds. These great, fanged wolves are wild, desperate, and hungry. Only the sworn Hunters have kept them back for five long, bloody years.

At the young age of fifteen, Belle LeClair became a Hunter. She no longer remembers how many hounds she's killed, or how many friends she's buried. Still, Belle leads the hunt till a tragedy forces her deep into the dark kingdom. Her heart will be turned, her loyalty tested-- and fate will intervene.

Amid a backdrop of Steampunk inventions and a harsh winter landscape, The Beast is a re-imagining of the infamous love between a beauty and a beast.

EXPECTED 2014 RELEASE -- ADD ON GOODREADS

So what do you think? Do you like it? After reading that, do you think you'd want to pick up the book?

Let me tell you, writing book descriptions is NOT easy. I think it might even be harder than writing the actual book lol. I want to tell you what the story is about, but I also don't want to give anything away. Have you ever read one of those blurbs that make you feel like you already know everything that's going to happen in the book? In fact, you start reading said book and you realize that it has no pull for you-- there's no surprise because the synopsis told you wants coming.

Twilight comes to mind. I read that before it was popular; back when most people hadn't heard of it. The first part of the book kinda sucked for me (Haha, unintended pun) because the back of the book said straight out that Bella falls in love with Edward and Edward is a vampire. So during those scenes where Bella is confused and trying to figure out what he is, all I wanted to do was bang my head against the wall. After that, the book was fine because the blurb didn't mention anything beyond that.

So yeah, writing descriptions is hard. Which is why I took so long to write one for this book. But hopefully I pulled it off. Special thanks to Trisha Wolfe for helping with edits. I swear I couldn't finish anything without her approval.

In other related news: THE BEAST's cover reveal is coming soon and I'll be looking for people to join my street team too. They'll both be happening around the same time (In a week or two). Anyone interested in this book should keep an eye out for both of those. Things are happening fast and soon I'll be needing lots of help spreading the word.

Thoughts Of Quitting YouTube

I've been making videos since 2007. It has been an up and down journey ever since. I can honestly say that I am not where I thought or wanted to be at this point. Then again, I can say that about a lot of things in my life.

Whenever people tell me that they're thinking about starting a channel and they want some advice, I always tell them that they've gotta make sure they're filming about something they love. Ya gotta love it and wanna do it, even when the views aren't there-- and a lot of the time, the views won't be. If you don't care for what you're talking about or are only lukewarm about it, then you won't last without the views. No one will be watching and you'll just stop. So, you gotta love it.

The hard part is finding something you love like that. Hell, I'm still trying to figure it out and I'm starting to think that I can't do just one thing. I love books, but only doing book videos doesn't work for me. I'm burnt out! I'm out of ideas! I've also done spiritual videos and dog videos and tried all sorts of stuff.

I'm starting to think that the only way for me to survive without the views on youtube is to post videos about all different aspects of me. Not just books, not just writing, not just spiritual stuff! A little of all of that, plus some singing and maybe some ranting.

Then there's the big question: If I post about all sorts of things, then what will be the draw to my channel? The answer to that is easy-- me. The host should be the draw and for most successful channels, it is. But really, would "me" ever be enough? I suppose that's exactly what I'm gunna find out this year.

Holy crap, that's scary.

So in today's video I talk about my views and my subscribers. And how low both have been. More importantly, I talk about how this lead me to think that maybe it's time that I quit YouTube.

This Year's To-Do List

I think it's important to set goals for the New Year. Not just resolutions cuz people tend to go into those expecting to quit. These are legitimate goals, so that I can progress my life, my health, and my career. I don't want to meet 2015 standing in the same place I am now.

They say that the difference between a poor man and a rich man is that a poor man plans for the weekend, but a rich man makes plans for the year. This makes a lot of sense to me. Since hearing this, I've been trying to change the way I look at the future. Start planning farther ahead and thinking about what it is that I want to get out of the year. It's a whole year for crying out loud, it seems like we should be accomplishing a lot. But how many of us really do? How many of us just live the day-to-day, standing in the same place, never moving forward?

I've been like that for the last few years and it's time to knock it off. No more slacking. No more coasting. Sure I've made small steps, but none of it has been enough.

So I'm setting these goals. When I complete one, I'll prove it (if I can) and mark it off the list. Hopefully by the end of the year, I'll be able to see how far I've come :)

How To Be Positive When Life Sucks

So, it's great to be positive, but how the heck do you do that when life really sucks. Sometimes it just seems like one bad thing after another is happening to you and it's hard to keep that smile on your face.

I went through this just recently. I increasingly found it harder to keep my thoughts on happy things when one shitty thing after another kept happening. I recognized two things during this time: 1) That allowing myself to feel bad all of the time was only going to hurt me in the long run. 2) I had to figure out how to pull myself out of the spiral downward.

So I started working at little things. Bit by bit, thought by thought, things started to come around. I only realized just days ago how much happier I am and how much better my life is. The best part is that my happiness is coming from me and not from any other outside force (Like chocolate or a new boyfriend). While outside influences that make us happy are nice and all, they generally aren't long term. And they can't be controlled. Learning how to change your thoughts and raise your mood on your own is, I think, the most important thing a person can do for themselves.

I am living proof of that, so far. Last year was one of the crappiest ever. It produced nothing of note-- except for heartache. This year seems to have done a one eighty. My books are coming along quickly. Not only does it look like I might publish two books THIS SPRING, but publishing four or five books this year seems completely doable. I'm posting videos again. My views and subscribers are going up. And I'm all around just enjoying life more. I've still got a long way to go and I have yet to tackle my health issues, but I have more hope and confidence now than ever before.

In today's video, I give tips and advice on how to be positive, especially when things get tough. This video is part of a 'How To Be Positive' series that I'm working on. For more help on being positive, check out my playlist: http://bit.ly/1nQFyup

Scholastic BOOK HAUL

Woot! Time for another book haul! I've got so many awesome books to share with you guys over the coming weeks, but I'm trying really hard to spread them out and not overload you guys. Book hauls are special and we want to keep em that way.

Quickie update before you watch the video though. I hit 40k last night in UNPURCHASED (I've officially dropped the 'The', as you may have noticed). I'm exactly at 40,520 words as of the writing of this post. Still in second for the #AuthorWars, but I'm closing in on Amber. As far as THE BEAST goes, I haven't gotten enough editing done to really mention it. A couple lines here a few paragraphs there. The #AuthorWars competition is keeping me pretty distracted. Don't worry though, TB hasn't been forgotten. Good news: At this rate, I most definitely can see myself publishing both books THIS SPRING! WHAT?!!!! EXCITING!!!!!!

Ok, back to today's video, which you can watch below. Hope you guys like it! My book hauls consist of books that I have purchased, were gifted to me, or sent to me for review. I mostly read Young Adult Fantasy/Paranormal, but will read other genres. The ARCs will eventually be given away, so please subscribe to enter those!

A Twitter Convo Among Authors - #AuthorWars

#AuthorWars is just a friendly game between writers. We compete on word counts, each one trying to get to the finish line first. We may talk smack, but really we're rooting for each other. These gals are the best, I highly recommend you check them out.
I gotta say it was so hard to say some of this out loud, as you can see by the bloopers. I don't think I could ever participate in smack talk in real life while keeping a straight face. I guess that means that a career in acting is out of the question. Damn ;P
Btw, the writing is coming along very well. I plan to reveal the cover for The Beast very soon. I just gotta wait for some things to arrive before I can do it. Unpurchased, which is my #AuthorWars project, is also coming along quickly. I can't wait to share it with you all. Late spring baby!

A Forgotten Wrap-Up

I filmed this video last October and, for some reason, never posted it. I figured I should probably do that cuz there are some really good books in here that I want to share. So I think you should watch the video. I really, really, do :)

My Wrap-Ups are always Spoiler-free and to the point. I primarily focus on Young Adult Fantasy/Paranormal, but sometimes read Adult Fantasy/Sci-fi/Paranormal/Romance. If you would like to see my Yes/No Checklist, Star Categories, Protagonist Meter, or the descriptions for these books follow the below links.
